The Al Khor Mangroves, often called Purple Island, are indeed one of the most significant ecosystems of Qatar. The area, around 30 kilometers from Doha, is sheltered by the Al Khor city and consists mainly of magnificent mangroves along with tidal channels and various kinds of birds. It got its name for the remains of an ancient dye that was found here and it is after the island that the dye was named. Presently, the island attracts people who love nature, photographers, and adventurers alike. Tourists can paddle through the tranquil mangrove channels, stroll on the wooden paths, and see the different animals that live in this untouched, serene setting. Basically, you are given a rare chance to see magnificence of Qatar's nature, not in the city but rather in nature.
History & Name Origin
The name means “the place where the dye comes from” in Hebrew and is derived from the name of the ancient cities that produced purple dye. In that area were found the remains of an ancient town that had some connection with trade and coastal settlements.
Mangrove Ecosystem & Wildlife
In addition, the mangroves serve as a barrier that protects the coast from erosion and nurtures a variety of animals. The wind and high tide create ideal conditions for playful dolphins in the area. In addition, the shallow waters around the islands are inhabited by fish, crabs, and various forms of marine life.
Kayaking & Outdoor Activities
Paddling through the tropical swamp in the hot sun is not a very attractive activity in summer. The natural wonders of the wild can be seen during the day from different viewpoints along the river/waterway. Wildlife photography in the mangrove forest and birdwatching in the great outdoors are some of the other options. Unique eco-tours and guided nature activities are offered.
Walking Trails & Boardwalks
Nice and easy walking paths to the family and beginners are set throughout the forest. The highest points, positioned over the tidal waters, provide beautiful sights for the nature lovers. A fantastic experience is provided by walking on these boardwalks surrounded by lush green trees and smelling their sweet scent.
Location & Accessibility
The resort is situated in the vicinity of Al Khor, roughly 50 km away from Doha. One can reach the resort by car through either the pavements or dirt roads. A parking lot is close to the entrance
