Madaba is situated just 30 kilometers southwest of Amman and is one of the most important cities in Jordan in terms of history and culture. It is more or less synonymous with the “City of Mosaics,” Madaba is crowned with an awesome collection of artworks from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods that narrate melo-dramatic and peaceful coexistence of different cultures, religions, and civilizations.
The world-renowned Madaba Map mosaic of the 6th century is the center piece or the heart of the city and it is in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. This amazing map is the very first and oldest surviving representation of cartographic nature depicting the Holy Land, and it gives awesome and intriguing insight into ancient geography. Madaba besides its mosaics, also delights its tourists and visitors through its ancient churches, old houses, and kind-hearted people.
Near to Madaba is the legendary Mount Nebo, where Moses supposedly climbed to see the Promised Land — a spot that gives one the most stunning panoramic view of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Madaba is a place where one can not only explore the history, the faith but also the local crafts, and thus, it makes available to the discerning traveler a unique experience made up of the three components: the city’s spiritual importance, the art, and the authentic Jordanian culture.
