St. George Church is the most important and most visited religious institution of Madaba and one of the most attractive places for tourists from all over the world due to its marvelous floor mosaic which is commonly referred to as the Madaba Map. The church was erected in the 19th century over a Byzantine church, and its arcade still retains the beautiful 6th-century mosaic that depicts Jerusalem, the surrounding cities, and numerous places associated with biblical stories. The rich and detailed mosaics provide a beautiful and informative record of the Holy Land during the time of the Byzantine Empire.
