Abydos can be found roughly 11 kilometers to the west of the Nile River in Upper Egypt. The city is recognized as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the history of ancient Egypt. A location once seen as the spiritual heart of the country, it became the principal cult center of Osiris (the god of the underworld), hence, a destination for religious pilgrimage for the ancient people of Egypt.
The temple of Seti I is the most significant point of fascination at Abydos. This New Kingdom temple is an architectural marvel, famed for the richness and high quality of its decorative elements - e.g., the most intricate carvings, detailed reliefs, and still brilliant hieroglyphs - that remain exceptionally well-preserved to this day. Inside the temple is the Abydos King List, a priceless chronological record of the pharaohs of Egypt. Not far from there is the Temple of Ramses II, where the grand wall scenes of royal victories are another attraction for the visitors.
The temples are only one part of the attraction; Abydos presents a tranquil and serene environment, with desert and simple villages around, which allows people to experience both the past and the present of the Egyptian rural area.
