Couple enjoying Paris with Eiffel Tower

Nizwa, also known as the "Pearl of Islam," was one of the oldest and most important cities in Oman in terms of culture, a city of such captivating nature that history, architecture, and tradition are all piled together under the Hajar Mountains. A once mighty capital of Oman, Nizwa was a trade, education, and religion hub but still feels very proud to be the keeper of the country's heritage.

The splendid Nizwa Fort, a 17th-century work of art by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Ya'rubi, is the focal point of the city. The great round tower of it can be seen from far off and from it one can get a panoramic view of the city and the date palm groves around. Not far from the fort, Nizwa Souk opens its doors to people, which is the liveliest market of the Oman — silver jewelry, pottery, spices, dates, and the famous Omani khanjar (dagger) are the things for which the locals trade in here.

The outside of the city has a lot of natural and cultural wealth. A trip to Oman would not be complete without visiting the ancient villages of Al Hamra and Misfat Al Abriyeen, trekking the spectacular canyons of Jebel Shams (the "Grand Canyon of Oman") or simply strolling through Wadi Ghul and Wadi Tanuf, where the splendid landscapes hide the ruggedness of Oman.

The appeal of the Nizwa vacation lies in its being a perfect mix of old-time charm with modern-day peace—a region where the ancient heritage with its warm Arabian hospitality is still very much alive and visible. The experience one gets here is unforgettable, be it through the fortresses, the local food, or just watching the mountains behind Nizwa.
