Heri es-Souani is a stunning historical complex in Meknes composed of large granaries and royal stables built during the time of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672–1727). It was built to contain huge amounts of grain and horses for the sultan's army, and the whole thing is a demonstration of the most advanced technologies of the period, featuring vaulted storage chambers, underground irrigation, and proper ventilation. Visitors may go through the maze of granaries, see the size of the stables, and realize the smartness employed in one of Morocco's most glorious imperial infrastructure projects.
