The Siq is the primary way into Petra, the long-lost Nabatean city in southern Jordan. This quite narrow and curvy gorge, is about 1.2 kilometers long and has sheer cliffs up to 80 meters high on both sides. Besides being the natural route to Petra, the Siq is also a place of impressive rock formations, rich colors of sandstone, and the water channels of the Nabateans. A visitor's expectation grows for the great unveiling of the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) to happen at the end of the Siq, as he or she walks through it. The combination of scenic wonders, antiquity, and masterly engineering makes the Siq an amazing and absolutely unavoidable experience during a Petra trip.
Historical Significance
The Nabateans constructed and maintained the site more than 2,000 years ago. It was a controlled entrance to Petra, providing safety and protection. The site was connected to water channels and drainage systems of the ancients.
Geological Features
A very narrow canyon was painfully carved through the beautiful red sandstone. The cliffs that are left are so high that they reach a height of 80 meters. The nature has its own way of painting and lighting the rocks, and the natural patterns are sometimes seen as well. Natural arches and formations of rocks appear at times.
Walking Through the Siq
The distance is about 1.2 kilometers from the Petra Visitor Center to the Treasury. The path is paved and has slight rises and falls. This is the place you will get to see the craftsmanship of the Nabateans, and besides, the water channels, and the old writings too.
Photography Tips
Go early in the morning for soft light and fewer people. Capture the cliffs' play of light and shadows as a contrast. Take a picture of the façade of the Treasury coming out from the Siq as it shows itself.
Location & Accessibility
Starts at the Petra Visitor Center and finishes at Al-Khazneh (Treasury). You can also go there by a horse-drawn carriage but a small fee will be charged. Other facilities include guides, water stations, and rest areas close to the location. The Siq is included in most Jordan tours, making it a must-visit stop for visitors exploring Petra and the country’s Nabatean heritage.
Visitor Tips
Wear shoes that you can walk in comfortably. Take water and sun protection with you. Plan a minimum of 45-60 minutes to walk the Siq. Be considerate to the natural and archaeological features.
