Abu Simbel, a site that is close to the southern border of Egypt and Sudan, is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable archaeological sites of Egypt. It was built during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II (13th century BC) and carved directly into the mountain, thus, becoming the everlasting symbol of the ancient Egyptian civilization’s art, power and religion.
The complex includes two large temples — the Great Temple of Ramses II, which is dedicated to the gods Ra-Horakhty, Ptah, and Amun, and the smaller Temple of Queen Nefertari, his most cherished wife. The gigantic statues of Ramses II standing at the entrance, each one being more than 20 meters tall, make the site unforgettable and have intrigued the visitors for ages.
One of the most awesome aspects of Abu Simbel is the solar alignment phenomenon. The gods’ statues inside the temple are lit up around February 22 and October 22, which is a semi-annual event when the first sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary precisely. It surely is a marvelous sight and also a remarkable proof of the ancient Egyptians’ great skills in astronomy and precision.
It was during the 1960s when the temples were moved bloodlessly — stone by stone — to a higher location to prevent them from being drowned by the waters that would result from the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Hence, it was a marvelous operation in terms of modern engineering and conservation combined.
