Madaba is situated just 30 kilometers southwest of Amman and is one of the most important cities in Jordan in terms of history and culture. It is more or less synonymous with the “City of Mosaics,” Madaba is crowned with an awesome collection of artworks from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods that narrate melo-dramatic and peaceful coexistence of different cultures, religions, and civilizations.
The world-renowned Madaba Map mosaic of the 6th century is the center piece or the heart of the city and it is in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. This amazing map is the very first and oldest surviving representation of cartographic nature depicting the Holy Land, and it gives awesome and intriguing insight into ancient geography. Madaba besides its mosaics, also delights its tourists and visitors through its ancient churches, old houses, and kind-hearted people.

The town of Madaba, which is situated at the geographical center of Jordan, probably most of all its ancient mosaics, that is why it was nicknamed the “City of Mosaics.” The attractions of historical churches, museums, and the local culture also play a big part in it, making visiting madaba a must for both the artist and the historian.

Madaba is approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Amman which equals to a drive of around 40 to 50 minutes. Tourists can opt for private car, taxi, or bus as the modes of transportation; therefore, it is very convenient and a popular day trip from the capital city.
