Merzouga, a small village on the border of the Sahara Desert, is one of the most magical desert places in Morocco. The village, with its golden landscapes, friendly Berber people, and the highest Erg Chebbi dunes, which are more than 150 meters high, represents the Moroccan desert perfectly.
Merzouga is the ideal place from which to experience the desert in all its glory—trekking with camels at dusk, riding in a 4x4 across the dunes, and staying overnight in desert camps where the sky is full of stars. Besides these, visitors can also go sandboarding, meet the nomadic families living in the desert, and see the attractions nearby, like Lake Dayet Srij, which is a winter and spring home to flamingos.

The best thing about Merzouga is Erg Chebbi, the huge golden sand dunes of the Sahara. Visitors come for camel trekking, desert camps, and, above all, the sunrise/sunset views and the authentic Berber culture.
Merzouga can be reached by car and bus from the major cities of Marrakech, Fes, and Ouarzazate. The nearest airport is Errachidia which is about 1.5 hours away and transfers to the desert are available.
The period from October to April is the best time to visit, as the temperatures are milder. The summer months are incredibly hot, particularly in the afternoons.
A regular car can take you to the village, but you will need a 4x4 to drive inside the dunes. Most tours provide off-road transport, so you won’t have to drive yourself.
The list of activities includes camel trekking, sandboarding, 4x4 dune rides, ATV/quad biking, and visiting Khamlia Gnawa village, and sleeping at a tents in the Sahara desert.
